Thiruvannamalai (called Trinomali during British times), is a major pilgrim center in India and has the sacred shrine of Lord Arunachaleswara and Ashrams. Five different temples were dedicated to lord Siva for worship in the form of five elements of nature, namely, earth, water, wind, fire and ether. The Arunachaleshwara Temple in Thiruvannamalai is one of them and Siva is worshipped in the form of fire; the others being in the form of Land at Ekambareswarar Temple, Kanchipuram; as Fire at Arunachaleshwara Temple, Thiruvannamalai; as Water at Jambukeswarar Temple, Trichy; as Sky/Ether at Nataraja Temple, Chidambaram; and as Air/Wind at Sri Kalahasteeswara Temple, Kalahasti in Andra Pradesh.
