Badami Caves- It is famous for rock cut and other structural temples. It is located in a ravine at the foot of a rugged, red sandstone outcrop that surrounds Agastya Lake. Badami is famous for its four cave temples - all hewn out of sand stone on the precipice of a hill. The oldest, Cave 1, has stunning carvings of Shiva in his Nataraja avatar, dancing the apocalyptic tandava. Caves 2 and 3 are dedicated entirely to Vishnu, whereas Cave 4 is has an image of the Jain Thirthankars Adinatha. The four cave temples represent the secular nature of the rulers then, with tolerance and a religious following that inclines towards Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.
